A forex VPS (virtual private server) is a remote computer, usually running Windows, that keeps MetaTrader and your Expert Advisors online 24 hours a day. For anyone copying trades with an EA, it solves one problem: copying stops when your computer does. Here is when you need an MT5 VPS, what to look for, and when your own PC is enough.
Why copy traders use a VPS
An Expert Advisor only runs while the MT5 terminal is open, logged in and online. At home that means your PC must stay on, awake and connected all week. Updates, power cuts, a sleeping laptop or a dropped Wi-Fi connection all stop copying — and a missed close is worse than a missed open, because a position can be left running without its exit.
What a forex VPS gives you
- Uptime — data-centre power and connectivity, typically 99.9%.
- Low latency — servers close to brokers' trade servers (London, New York, Amsterdam) fill orders faster.
- Independence — you can switch off your own computer; trading continues.
- Access from anywhere — connect by Remote Desktop from a PC or phone.
A VPS reduces technical risk, not market risk. It keeps the copier online; it does not make a trade more likely to win. Trading carries a risk of loss.
Do you need one?
| Situation | VPS? |
|---|---|
| Your PC can run 24/5 with stable power and internet | Optional |
| You use a laptop that sleeps or travels | Recommended |
| Frequent power or internet cuts where you live | Strongly recommended |
| Several MT5 accounts copying at once | Recommended |
What to look for in an MT5 VPS
- Enough memory for MT5 (1–2 GB per terminal is typical).
- A location close to your broker's server.
- Windows Server with automatic restart of MT5 after updates.
- Clear monthly pricing and easy cancellation.
- Who has access — your MT5 password will be stored on it.
The free option many brokers offer
Some brokers give a free VPS to clients above a certain balance or trading volume. MetaQuotes also sells a built-in "virtual hosting" for MT5 that migrates your EAs to its servers. Check whether either covers what you need before paying.
Our optional VPS service
CopyTradingSystem offers a VPS for $25 per account per month, paid from your wallet. It is optional — you may run the Expert Advisor anywhere. To set it up we need the account's MT5 login, password and server; the password is stored encrypted, only the team member who sets up the VPS can read it, and it is deleted on request or when the service ends. It renews monthly if your wallet balance allows, and you can cancel the renewal at any time. Full rules: Terms, section 4.
Running MT5 at home instead
- Turn off sleep and hibernation; set Windows updates to install outside market hours.
- Use a wired connection if you can, and a UPS against short power cuts.
- Set MT5 to start automatically with Windows, and check it daily.
Setting up MT5 on a VPS, step by step
- Connect to the VPS with Remote Desktop (Windows) or a Remote Desktop app (Mac, phone).
- Download MT5 from your broker's website — not from a third party — and install it.
- Log in with your account number, password and server.
- Install the Expert Advisor and allow its WebRequest address (see MT5 copy trading).
- Attach the EA, turn on Algo Trading, and check the Experts tab for errors.
- Set MT5 to start automatically when Windows restarts.
- Disconnect from Remote Desktop — do not log off, or MT5 closes.
Latency, explained
Latency is the time a message takes to travel between your terminal and the broker's server, measured in milliseconds (ms). From a home connection far from the broker it might be 100–300 ms; from a VPS in the same data-centre region, 1–10 ms. For a copier, lower latency means a fill closer to the master's price. It matters most in fast markets; for slower strategies the difference is small.
Keeping a VPS secure
- Use a strong, unique Windows password, and don't reuse your MT5 password.
- Keep Windows updated (schedule updates for the weekend).
- Don't install unrelated software or browse the web on it.
- Change your MT5 password if anyone else ever had access — with our VPS service you can do this at any time; the VPS stops until you give us the new one.
Frequently asked questions
Is a forex VPS worth it?
If copying stopping for a few hours would cost you more than the monthly fee — usually yes for active copy trading on a laptop.
Does a VPS make trades more profitable?
No. It makes copying more reliable and fills slightly faster; it does not change the strategy.
Can I run several MT5 accounts on one VPS?
Yes, with enough memory. Install a separate MT5 terminal for each account.
