How to Choose a Forex Broker for Copy Trading

Choosing a forex broker: a modern glass office building against a blue sky

With copy trading your money sits at a broker, not with the copy service. That makes the broker the most important choice you will make. This guide explains how to choose a forex broker for copy trading: the checks that protect your money, the features a copier needs, and the warning signs.

1. Regulation comes first

Look for regulated forex brokers licensed by a serious regulator — for example the FCA (UK), ASIC (Australia), CySEC (Cyprus/EU), or the FSCA (South Africa). Then:

  • check the licence on the regulator's own register, not just the broker's site;
  • note which entity of the broker will hold your account — groups often have several, regulated in different places;
  • ask about segregated client funds and negative balance protection.

2. MetaTrader 5 support

Most copiers, including ours, run on MT5. Check that the broker offers MT5 for your account type, and whether accounts are hedging or netting (hedging is the usual choice for copying). See MT5 copy trading explained.

3. Execution quality

Copy trading depends on getting a fill close to the master's. Prefer brokers with fast execution, few requotes and a server location you can reach quickly (a VPS near it helps).

4. Costs

CostWhat to compare
SpreadTypical spread on the pairs the strategy trades, not the "from" figure
CommissionPer lot, on raw-spread accounts
SwapOvernight financing, and whether swap-free accounts exist
Other feesInactivity, deposit and withdrawal fees

5. Deposits and withdrawals

Check the methods available in your country, the processing time, and whether withdrawals go back to the same method. A broker that is easy to pay into but slow to pay out is a broker to avoid.

6. The minimum deposit — and the real minimum

A low forex broker minimum deposit is convenient, but the amount a copy strategy needs is usually higher. Read how much money you need for copy trading.

Red flags

  • No verifiable licence, or a licence from a register that does not list the broker.
  • Bonuses that lock your withdrawals until a trading volume is reached.
  • "Account managers" who call you and push you to deposit more.
  • Withdrawal delays explained by ever-new "fees" or "taxes".

The brokers we work with

Our broker page lists the brokers we connect today and their status. Plus500 and XTB are our highly recommended brokers; they have no MT5, so our team connects the account after you buy a package and send a connection request. Brokers that offer MT5 — such as Pepperstone and RoboForex — run our connector directly, and any other MT5 broker works too. Read more in MT5 brokers for copy trading.

Links to brokers on our website may be partner (referral) links. The broker is a separate company; your agreement, its fees and its handling of your money are between you and the broker — see our Terms, section 2.

For copying, the account type should match what the copy service expects — ask before you open one.

Verifying a licence, step by step

  1. Find the licence number and the legal entity name in the broker's website footer.
  2. Open the regulator's register directly (type the address yourself — not via a link on the broker's site).
  3. Search by the entity name or number and check that the website address listed matches.
  4. Check the regulator's warning list for clones using the same name.
  5. Confirm which entity your own account will be opened with during sign-up.

Test the withdrawal early

Once your account is verified, make a small deposit and a small withdrawal before funding it fully. It costs little and tells you more about the broker than any review: how long it takes, what is asked of you, and whether the money arrives where it should.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best forex broker for copy trading?

One that is regulated where you live, offers MT5 (or is supported by your copy service), executes well and pays out reliably. The cheapest spread is not enough on its own.

Can I use the MT5 account I already have?

Yes. Any broker that offers MetaTrader 5 works with our connector.

Should I choose a broker with a bonus?

Be careful: many bonuses restrict withdrawals. Read the bonus terms before accepting one.
