Two ways of following someone else's trades dominate the forex world: forex signals and copy trading. Both start with another trader's decision. The difference is what happens next — with signals you place the trade yourself; with copy trading it is placed for you. Here is how they compare.
What are forex signals?
A forex signal is a message: "Buy EUR/USD at 1.0850, stop-loss 1.0820, take-profit 1.0910." It arrives by app, email, Telegram or the MT5 Signals service. You read it, decide, and enter the trade by hand — or not.
What is automated copy trading?
Automated (or "auto") copy trading removes the manual step. A copier receives the master's trade and places it in your account immediately, sized to your balance, and closes it when the master closes. You decide whom to follow, not each trade. See what is copy trading? for the full picture.
Copy trading vs signals, side by side
| Aspect | Forex signals | Copy trading |
|---|---|---|
| Who places the trade | You | The copier |
| Speed | Minutes — the price may have moved | Seconds |
| Effort | Watch for every signal | Set up once, then monitor |
| Exits | You must follow updates | Closed automatically |
| Control per trade | Full | Limited (you control the service, not each trade) |
| Typical cost | Monthly subscription | Subscription, performance fee or package fee |
| Human error | Typos, missed exits, hesitation | Mostly removed |
The hidden problem with manual signals
Signals look cheaper and give more control, but most of their weakness is in execution. Entering late, at a worse price, skipping the losing-looking trades or exiting early all change the result. Two people following the same signal service can end up with very different accounts.
The trade-offs of copy trading
Copy trading fixes execution but asks for trust: trades will be opened that you might not have chosen, and losses are copied as faithfully as wins. It also needs the copier to stay online — the reason a VPS is common.
Either way, the market risk is the same: a losing trade loses money whether you placed it by hand or a copier did. Neither method makes trading safe — see copy trading risks.
Which suits you?
- Choose signals if you want to learn by doing, have time during market hours, and want the final say on every trade.
- Choose copy trading if you value consistent execution and limited time over trade-by-trade control.
- Avoid both if the provider promises fixed returns or hides its losing trades.
CopyTradingSystem is copy trading, with a defined end: the package trades your MT5 account until it is $50 in profit or 7 days pass — and if the target is not reached, the $25 fee comes back. See how it works.
How to test a signal provider before paying
- Ask for a full history — losing trades included — over at least six months.
- Check that entries were published before the move, with timestamps.
- Follow the free or trial signals on a demo account for two weeks, exactly as published.
- Compare your demo result with the provider's claimed result for the same period.
The gap between the two is the execution cost of signals — the part a copier removes.
Telegram signal groups: a word of caution
Many signal groups are honest hobbyists; some are not. Warning signs: screenshots of profits with no history, "VIP" upgrades that promise better signals, pressure to open an account with a specific broker through the group's link, or private messages offering to "manage" your account. A real service has a website, published terms and a support process. Our article on copy trading scams lists the patterns.
A month of each, side by side (illustrative)
| Aspect | Signals | Copy trading |
|---|---|---|
| Trades published or copied | 40 | 40 |
| Trades you actually took | 31 (missed 9 while busy) | 40 |
| Average entry difference | 2–4 pips worse | a fraction of a pip |
| Exits | Some late, some early | Same time as the master |
The numbers are an example, not data — but the pattern is typical: signals lose more to execution than to strategy.
Frequently asked questions
Are forex signals worth paying for?
Only with a long, verified record and if you can execute them reliably. Many signal services show only their winners.
Is automated forex trading the same as copy trading?
Not always. Automated trading can mean your own robot (an EA) making decisions; copy trading means following another account's trades automatically.
Can I combine signals and copy trading?
You can, in separate accounts. In the same account, manual trades will change the copier's results and, in our case, the profit calculation.
